I can't find my Social Security card, what to do if I lost my Social Security card?

If you lost your Social Security card you will need to request a replacement form for a Social Security card from the Social Security Card Administration (SSA).

You can do this online, but requesting a replacement card is not available online for all 50 states.

How Long Does a Replacement Card Take?

I would recommend that you go to your local SSA office right when they open and you get in and out in around 15 minutes. If you go later in the day, it may take longer. You'll need to bring one document from each list to verify your identity and citizenship.

Citizenship:

  • A religious record made before the age of five showing your date of birth
  • A hospital record of your birth
  • A passport

Identity:

  • A driver’s license
  • State-issued non-driver identification card
  • A passport

Once the SSA processes your application, your new card will arrive in two weeks.

If you do an online request for a replacement card, the process takes a bit longer. Once you get your new card be sure to place it in a safe place.

Need to Replace Your Lost Social Security Card? Apply Online!

If you’re a temporary citizen of the United States or a person who is willing to migrate to the United States, it is mandatory that you have a Social Security Number (SSN).

This security card has a 9-digit unique number and is issued to all the citizens of the United States – be it permanent residents or temporary working residents.

SSN is issued to all the citizens of the United States by the Social Security Administration, which is an independent agency within the United States. You can file your application to get your SSN through online.

Application Process

If you’ve never had your SSC card, you may face several issues in your tax filing process, or in getting your credit card, or even getting your job, and so on. Applying for this card comes along with several rules and specifications that need to be clearly understood.

You can easily apply for this card through online portals that are available in the US. One such portal is my Social Security – which takes less than 10 minutes to create an account and replace a lost or stolen SSN card.

To apply online at my Social Security account to receive a new security social card you need to meet these requirements:

  • You’re a U.S. citizen age 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address. This includes APO, FPO, and DPO addresses.
  • You aren’t requesting a name change or any other change to your card.
  • You have a driver’s license or state-issued identification card from one of the many participating states or the District of Columbia.

Here are the steps you need to take to apply online for a Social Security card:

1. Choose Your Circumstance

You must select one from the list of circumstances – choose whether if this is your first card, a replacement card, or change of name.

2. Answer The Prompts

Based on the circumstance, the application will ask you a series of questions. As you answer the questions, the SS-5 application gets filled in automatically.

3. Submission

Once you complete the application, submit the completed application for the review.

4. Secure Payment

Once you’ve applied, you’ll be directed to the payment page. You have to pay a fee of $39 to complete the SSC application process. This online portal uses a secure and trusted payment gateway through which you can complete the payment process. Once the payment is made, you can download the form.

5. Downloading Of Resource Guide

The fee payment includes a resource guide – a document that is available in plain English and helps you navigate through the supporting documentation requirements.

Getting Your Social Security Card is Simple

Several online portals and agencies within the US help you get your SSC. They provide you with online portals that help in the easy filing of SSC application.

The SSC form must be filled in precisely, and all the information that you provide must be accurate and true. You must attach supplementary documents along with your application; else your SSC application will be denied.

Though the procedure might seem daunting, you can fill in the application easily with the help of these agencies or with proper guidance.
